Asia

Mining is widespread throughout continental Asia and Asia-Pacific, rich in resources. The region continues to push the boundaries of the industry and in 2016 held its first Deep Sea Mining Summit. As well as being the world’s leading consumer of most mining products, China is also the leading producer of many commodities such as thermal coal, gold, and more rare earth minerals.

IMIU’s portfolio is predominantly based within Asia-Pacific and comprises mostly gold and copper mines in such countries as Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Malaysia and Laos.

Africa

Our portfolio in Africa is heavily weighted towards South and Southern Africa extending up to West Africa (e.g. Mali, Ghana, Guinea, Cote d'lvoire, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Sierra Leone).

Gold and platinum feature heavily in South Africa and include some of the world's deepest underground mines. Coal and base metals also are prevalent within South Africa.

Gold mining in West Africa is predominantly open pit although future development includes a number of underground operations.

We are involved in many of the copper mines within the Copperbelt running through Zambia and the DRC in Central Africa.

Australasia

Australia is one of the world’s largest producers of many mineral commodities including copper, gold, iron ore, and coal, as well as producing other minerals such as bauxite, nickel, uranium, minerals sands, salt. It is also the only known significant source of pink and red diamonds. The gold rushes since 1851 had a lasting effect on the country and gold remains an important resource in many territories. It may be a little known fact that Herbert Hoover, 31st President of the United States, worked at a gold mine in Western Australia.

IMIU’s interest extends throughout the region including New Zealand and encompasses gold, copper, and nickel. Iron ore features predominantly in Western Australia and coal in Queensland and New South Wales involving some of the largest operations in the region.

Europe

Mining in Europe has a long tradition but whilst the sector has become one of the most modern and innovative it is no longer a major producer of metals with output being less than any other region globally. Despite this it is home to some of the world’s largest mining companies and there remain important deposits throughout the continent and include gold and silver, base metals, and coal.

IMIU’s portfolio includes gold, copper, and coal mines but also a number of downstream smelting and processing facilities.

North America

Mining in North America has been active since colonial times but became a major industry in the 19th century following the discovery of gold in California sparking the first gold rush in 1848. Large deposits of coal particularly in Appalachia, the Illinois and Powder River Basins, fuelled the country for most of its history especially following the ‘wood crisis’ of the early 19th century.

IMIU’s portfolio in North America includes some of the world’s largest miners and some of the largest mines covering gold, copper, and base metals. Canada has some of the most impressive diamond mines located within the arctic circle and since 1998 has been a major producer of high-quality diamonds.

South America

Latin America has a long history of mining from the pre-Columbian gold wealth and the legendary El Dorado through the rich Colonial silver mines of modern day Peru and Bolivia and to the present day mines that include copper in Chile, iron ore in Brazil, gold in Argentina, and coal in Colombia. The evidence of this rich history can be seen throughout the region which includes one of the few countries in the world named after a metal to an appreciation of the Cornish pasty introduced by ‘Cousin Jacks’.

IMIU’s portfolio of insured operations is predominantly centred on copper, gold, and base metal mines in Peru and Chile. Many of these are amongst the highest mines in the world at altitudes of up to 5,000m in the Andes. However, there are also significant operations in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and in Central America.
